We cramp them into shoes that are too tight, smother them in "unbreathable" nylon fabric, subject them to pressure from our body weight merely by standing on them, and pound them against hard surfaces when we walk or run. No wonder our feet often develop painful and unattractive problems! If you're one of those people who cry, "Oh my aching feet," perhaps you'll recognize some of these common ailments.

Stop Bunions
Enlargement of the big toe joint. Bunions develop on the inner side of the foot at that joint as a result of a weakness in the bone structure of the foot. This deformity develops gradually and can cause pain from shoes rubbing against the enlarged bone.

Stop Corns And Callouses
These collections of hard, dry, dead cells, build up over time as a result of pressure or friction. A corn takes the shape of a small cone with the point pressing into sensitive underlying tissue. Hard corns are found on tops of toes, while soft corns are found between toes and seed corns form on the sole of the foot. Callouses are caused by diffuse pressure over a larger area found on the plantar surface (bottom) of the foot.

Stop Hammertoe
Frequently due to inherited foot structures, this is a contraction of the toe caused by tightening of the ligaments that connect one bone to another, forcing the toe bones to assume abnormal position. Often, as a result, shoes apply pressure to the deformed toe causing a corn to form.

Stop Burning Feet
Circulation is a major factor. Nevertheless, there can be a skin condition present, bio-mechanical changes causing friction under the metatarsal heads (ball of the foot). Diabetes, as well as nerve entrapments, are also major causes. Today there are new techniques to alleviate the pain associated with these conditions.

Stop Heel Pain
The most common cause of heel pain is either a heel spur or plantar fasciitis. Both of these can be found because of the lowering of the arch whether flat foot or high arch. The bio-mechanical function of the foot is abnormal causing this force on the strong ligament called the plantar fascia. The symptoms follow a pattern of pain in the heel and arch when first arising in the AM and then again after rest. Initial treatment may involve injecting the area with cortisone to reduce the inflammation and pain. The use of physical therapy for approximately 3-4 weeks three times a week and the making of custom orthotics to fit into your shoes is another method of treatment. These orthotics control the cause, a bio-mechanical problem. Surgery should be the very last resort.
